The following regulations apply to Balustrade systems in South Africa

Residential Application

A concentrated force of 1kN acting in any direction between vertically downward and horizontally inward or outward, applied over a 100mm length for beam elements and over 100mm x 100mm area for plate elements acting at the top of any other position of the guard, whichever is the most severe; or a distributed horizontal force of 500N/m applied at the top of the guard and acting outward, except that, where the guard may be exposed to crowd surge loads from either side, the force must be taken as liable to act inward or outward.

Prescribed Height (SABS 0400 Part D)
All balustrading except for swimming pools and swimming baths shall have a height of not less than 1 metre and shall not have any openings that permits the passage of a 100mm diameter ball. All balustrading for swimming pools and swimming baths shall have a height of not less than 1.2 metres measured from the ground level and shall not contain any opening, which will permit passage of a 100mm diameter ball.

Allowable Deflection
Maximum allowable deflection is 1/125th height or span or 25mm whichever is the lesser.
